Women's social role is too often devalued throughout the world. Yet, they are central actors in the family. This painting is a tribute to women, black women and more particularly black Haitian women. It salutes their commitment as citizens within the economic fabric. For all those who know the Haitian culture, this painting represents strength and courage. The map on the vessel will remind us that these women carry the country on their shoulders.
I am a young Caribbean woman who lives on a magical island: Haiti, the mountainous land of the Antilles. I am a self-taught artist who discovered her talent very young. I remember that the principal of my elementary school would choose me to decorate the aisle of her office with my vibrant drawings on cardboard for our annual carnival festivities.
